FILM  LOCATIONS  IN  THE  ALGARVE

Picture
The Algarve is the most southern region of Portugal and one of the most attractive areas for filming due to its all-year mild weather, variety and beauty of its beaches, cities, sites and landscapes. This area is famous for some of the most stunning beaches and impressing coast lines in the whole world. The Algarve enjoys the best climate in Europe, with the highest amount of sunshine hours. It has an average of over 300 sunny shooting days per year. The maximum temperatures in the Algarve vary throughout the year between 15º C and 40º C.  The light is clean and clear, similar to that of South Africa and the Caribbean. In addition, the Algarve is promoting itself  to become a premier destination for film shoots and photographic productions, contributing to strengthening the image and promotion of the county.Portugal could be the setting for filming major Hollywood productions.“Portugal, that smaller Iberian nation bordering Spain, could seem fated to forever live in the shadow of its mighty cinema neighbour. With less than a quarter of Spain’s population and fewer resources, Portugal has often been overlooked, both as a cinema nation and – despite the country’s stunning natural beauty, mild, sunny climate and top-notch infrastructure – as a location for international shoots. Producers from Warner Bros., Paramount, Disney and HBO, among other major North American studios, recently visited the Algarve to get to know the country as a potential location for filming.

After Bollywood, Turismo de Portugal has turned to Hollywood to attract inter -national productions to film in the national market. With the Algarve that doubles California as no other European location, in combination with the Tax Rebate program and the amount of available quality film crew,  Hollywood shows an increasing interest and is slowly but steadily exploring and discovering the Algarve. However, it stresses how “the global production industry has now finally discovered Portugal,” referencing several production companies that have made the decision to shoot here. It has even been reported that ‘House of the Dragon’, the highly-anticipated prequel to the record-breaking fantasy TV show ‘Game of Thrones’, is partially filmed in the Portuguese medieval village of Monsanto in Idanha-a-Nova. Several international films have already been shot in the Algarve, like Paramount Picture's "The Infernal Machine" starring Guy Pearce.(see below) Though the story is about within the U.S. Southwest, alongside the border with Mexico, The Infernal Machine was filmed entirely  in the Algarve area of Portugal. The Loulé Film Office is assisting projects, accessing locations and handling bureaucracy within the film industry in the concelho of Loule. In addition, they are promoting the Algarve  to become a premier destination for film shoots yearly at Cannes International Film Festival.

"The Infernal Machine" was shot entirely in the Algarve, doubling for the Southwest US - Mexican border

On 11 October 2021 Paramount acquired worldwide distribution rights to The Infernal Machine, a psychological drama/ thriller written and directed by Andrew Hunt and starring  Guy Pearce, just after the pic wrapped filming  in the Algarve region of Portugal, which doubled for the  Southwest US /  Mexican border.
Guy Pearce plays Bruce Cogburn, a reclusive and controversial author who is drawn out of hiding by an obsessive fan.
What ensues is a labyrinthine and treacherous game, creating a web of lies and manipulation that ultimately reveals the true meaning of The Infernal Machine.
Alice Eve, Alex Pettyfer and Jeremy Davies also star.
“My colleagues and I are delighted that Paramount see in the story the same potential that we see and we could not be happier to have them as our distribution partners and to entrust them with our baby,” said producer Lionel Hicks.
